A little about Physiotherapy…
Physiotherapy is a health care profession that is concerned with helping people move and participate in life, especially when their movement or function is impaired by ageing, sport or work related injury, long periods of inactivity, disability or disease.
A common misconception is that physiotherapists only treat musculoskeletal sports injuries. This is not true as physiotherapists are skilled in the assessment and management of a broad range of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems. They work in both private practice as well as the public health system in a variety of areas including: cardio-respiratory, neurology, orthopaedics, paediatric, seniors’ health, sports and women’s health.
Physiotherapists use a wide range of drug-free techniques to relieve pain, restore movement and prevent further problems, such as:
- Joint manipulation and mobilisation
- Therapeutic stretches and exercise
- Movement re-education.
- Ice, heat, ultrasound and tens
- Soft tissues massage
- Breathing techniques.
